Princess For a Day
by Kristin Johnson
While you are happily
(or not so) planning the romance and fun of your
wedding day, don't forget about children. The children in the wedding
party, that is. .
If you have sisters
and cousins ages 8 and younger, or if you are
remarrying and have a small daughter, you have probably decided to make
the little girl in your life princess for a day. Little girls love
weddings, and they love dressing up in beautiful clothing. There is
nothing more endearing than the sight of a little girl, who three hours
before may have gotten paint all over her room, walking with innocent
grace in a tulle or organza dress with tiny kid or patent leather shoes.
Your little one is all smiles, because she feels special being included
in
a grown-up occasion, one that celebrates family and love.
How will your flower
girl remember the day you say 'I do'? In the rush of
the wedding, don't ignore her. Remember that Coca-Cola commercial where
the little girl shares her soft drink with her older sister in the bridal
gown? This is an important day for both of you.
Some Tips:
If she's unhappy,
suggest a time-out. Have someone else in the wedding
party, or a family friend, handle the situation.
If she acts like a child, remember, she is. But most little girls have
the
advantage over little boys when it comes to acting grown-up.
Make sure the wedding party treats her as one of them.
Help her with her dress, but don't fuss if she wants to do it herself.
In
her mind, this is her day too.
One way you can make the event memorable is to purchase a guardian angel
necklace or heart pin. Many of these come with little poems. If you
would
like to compose one of your own, keep it sweet and simple. For example,
try this poem, from Poems For You:
"Shine today,
little angel, and fly
We're so proud of you, our sweet one,
When you think of this later, as days go by
Remember the joy, remember the fun.
When you marry, we wish you happiness too
May you find an angel as precious as you."
Be sure to include
your flower girl in the bouquet toss, and have the
groom dance with her once. When it's time for the girls to dance, and
your
little princess takes your hand on the dance floor, you'll see her
beautiful smile, and that will be like a blessing from Heaven on your
wedding day.
